Billy Stewart Fridolijn is a marvel, her voice clear as crystal, bright as a summer sun, soft and sensual without being weak or overpowered by her music. She's a wonderful singer/songwriter and jazz-tinged folk artist using instruments uniquely with quirky, kitschy cool chords and progressions and a blues-infused, though unobtrusive, backbeat to support the modern folk sound that allows her vocals to soar. The wordplay and beautiful melodies backing her translucent singing creates a dreamlike state; think of floating upon the sounds below, held afloat by Fridolijn's dulcet, radiant voice as it synthesizes with the instruments,. To listen to this young lady is ethereal. I'm so thankful to have found this incredible artist.
NARCISSUS is pure magic. This beautiful song, a tragic look at a love that's grown overbearing, selfish, one-sided, and the irony therein is heavy and quite poetic, is perfect. The track is marvelous, musically, and splendidly penned with sad but brillant lyrics. Favorite track: Narcissus.

PaoloC This combination of composition, vocal and musical entanglement entrances the listener and transports to another place. Magical. Favorite track: Frame This.

henry zander everything here really holds to the above track title, whimsical. I feel as though a beautiful mother is singing to me under her breath she produces a sort of ease in her voice that few other artists can match. Favorite track: Whimsical.

about

“Had Nick Drake been a graceful young woman living this day in age, this is the album she would have made.” With this enchanting quote Jazzism magazine gave Fridolijn's solo debut Catching Currents a glorious spot in their best of 2015 list.

Fridolijn, an original singer and songwriter hailing from Amsterdam first appeared in 2011 with the release of 'Crossing the Rubicon', by her band Finn Silver. The album reached top chart positions in Holland and Japan. It brought the band to international stages like Billboard Live Tokyo & Osaka as well as North Sea Jazz Festival. Itunes hauled the band 'New Jazz Artist of the Year'.

Fridolijn got involved in Singer/Songwriter supergroup 'Ladies of the Lowlands', she toured internationally with British jazzband Kairos 4tet, pianist Gideon van Gelder (Jose James), guitarist Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) and became host of the monthly vocal session at Amsterdam’s North Sea Jazzclub.

After an intense time 2014 was the year to withdraw and focus on writing music again. With songwriters Danny Fisher and David Austin she took to the idyllic British countryside where the three ended up writing personal, deep and beautiful new music. The efforts of multiple writingsessions resulted in a magical studio session in London, during the summer of 2014. With a British topband of Richard Spaven on drums (Jose James/ Flying Lotus), Grant Windsor on keys (Jose James/ Gregory Porter), fellow songwriters Danny Fisher and David Austin on acoustic guitars, and Alex Bonfanti on bass Fridolijn and her band recorded a brand new album. With the help of mixing engineer Axel Reinemer and producer Richard Spaven the album was finalized at the Jazzanova Recording Studio in Berlin.

The result is Catching Currents: a striking solo debut that blurs the boundaries between cinematic folk, singersongwriter, jazz, electronica, and broken beats and blends them into touching songs.

With Catching Currents Fridolijn got signed to V2 Records Benelux and P-vine Records Japan, where it climbed the jazzcharts up to the top 10, and was NorthWave FM album of the week.

The response to the album was impressive: "A solo debut of overwhelming ripeness." (Revolver's Lust for Live magazine), "It's only a matter of time for Catching Currents to become a succes. It would be more than deserved." (Platomania), "Fridolijn manages to move, seduce and impress with timeless popsongs." (Velvet Records).

When Fridolijn is asked to why she decided to move on by herself and releasing such a personal album under her own name she replies: “When all currents seem to suddenly be flowing in a different direction than you, you can either struggle on, battle the undertow, or you can let go, catch the current, and let yourself be carried towards the unknown...”
An intuitive, daring move, proven to be the right one.
Or as Written in Music wrote: “A surprisingly big talent stands up”.

Track Name: Frame This
FRAME THIS

Told you, old news
show me, won’t you
How to find these days
Here always.

And oh, did I say “Nothing Changes”?
Well, hold to that notion, weigh this.
Why can’t this moment be...?

Ageless, Save these traces,
Paint this moment and
Frame it, nameless, embrace it

So pure, So true No cure, No clue
a mote in a ray, a note in a lay
Yesterday’s gone to the ages,
Tomorrow’s the strangest of places
Why can’t this moment be...?

Ageless Blameless Explain this
Why does this innocence age us?
Fading, Don’t wake me, It’s not that simple so...

Make me, Naive, Don’t leave, Just weave
A needle in hay, A flag in the grey
Well, I’m closer to broken than pristine
All that I’ve chosen’s a daydream,
I’m closer to knowing now I see...

The magic, Imagine The madness
When I yield to its passing
And damn this Beauty, Embrace it
Take this moment and frame it
Track Name: Sailing Blind
Whatever your floats your boat, he said
So I took him out to sea
and said come with me.

Let me be your promise, you could be my escape,
he said: "one eyed
we can rule our kingdom of the blind"

Floating, drifting,
Circling, swimming
out at sea

Sailing blind,
agreeing it is better
not to see

Half and half makes one, right?
the maths don't lie
or at least it's worth
a halfhearted try…

We raised the sails,
of the life raft we built
off we went,
tracing down the gateways
to the promised land

Floating, drifting,
Circling, swimming
out at sea

Sailing blind,
agreeing it is better
not to see

One by one we collected the pieces
of our broken souls.
we glued them together,
varnished the cracks with hope
convincing ourselves
that what can't be seen will soon,
soon go unremembered.

Floating, drifting,
Circling, swimming
out at sea

Sailing blind,
agreeing it is better
not to see
Track Name: Whimsical
Clouds turn green and grey
hear the sound of the air change
ominously paving the way
for mother nature’s power play

Sway like the waves
fields face the force with grace
we may bend but will not
we may...

Bend, but will not break
Oh feather, oh seed
be released, unhinged
handed over to the whim

Meadow in the storm
be a warrior
strengthened by faith
of an appearing tawny
predicting victory

Sway like the waves
fields face the force with grace
we may bend but will not
we may

bend but will not break
Oh feather, oh seed
drift off whimsically
wherever you are sent to be

I may bend but will not break
Oh feather, oh seed
drift off whimsically
wherever you are sent to be

I am soil, I am the seed
rooted growing
to be the grass the field
storm on
you won't take the best of me

I may bend but will not break
bend but will not break...
Track Name: Still Waving
I was still waving, waving
way after you left
way after you left

as I watched you fading, fading
a castle sinking in the sand
a castle sinking in the sand

Soon you will be followed by your shadow
and I'll be left with all that I asked for
silence echoes within me

Wind, pick me up and wish me away
shed the coat grown to be my skin
and release me of its weight
shaking up what's set in stone back into loose sand
I regain this ground to be my own become my home
free from all strings attached

I was still waving, waving
way after you left
way after you left

As I watch you fading, fading
I still stand
I still stand

Left with but a suitcase full of dreams
drowning in opportunity
void echoing within me

Here comes the wind to pick me up wish me away
shedding the coat grown to be my skin
clearing up the numbing daze
hear them calling out my name
here to dance in shoes my own
the dream belonged to someone else
I regain this ground to be own

shaking up what's set in stone back into loose sand
I regain this ground to be my own become my home
free from all strings attached

I was still waving, waving
Track Name: Hold to Me
Dance upon the scale
held between the sun and moon
Stand and face the gale
did you believe you’d come so true?

say your piece
the world will understand
grid your teeth
you’ll fool shifting sands

Close your eyes
to all you’ve seen
hold on tight
hold to me

Scared me half to sleep
I never knew that fear could sooth
dare to face the cheat
now you have nothing left to prove

say your piece
the world will understand
grid your teeth
you’ll fool the shifting sands

Close your eyes
to all you’ve seen
hold on tight
hold to me

hear the sounds of all this peace
hold me now hold to me
Track Name: Guards Down
One moment I stood strong
a feather, bravely up against the wind

One washy attempt
A wave, reasoning the current

Sensible resist
overruled by the blink of an eye
Lasted for one memorable sigh

These poisonous leaves
taste too good not to touch

maybe it'll be fine
if we don't take too much?

I'd rather risk to fall
than to not jump at all
'cause for something that's supposed to be wrong
this feels way too right

Up against the tide
It's easy to resign

My head on your chest
I confess
my heart in your hands
being with you it's crystal clear

All there is is here
All there is is now
All I have is this
All that counts

All there is is here
All there is is now
All I have is this
All guards down
Track Name: Narcissus
Every day he plucked me narcissus
suffering thunderstorms and rains
He’d tell me all about the dangers he had to face
While he was out in the fields, finding me
plucking me narcissus.
His ultimate act of love

Can’t you bring me a flower white, pink, green or red?
I’d ask him every now and then, here’s what he said

Narcissus are what’s best for you
while he looked me in the eye
Really trust me ask no more
for I know that I’m right
And all I did just like them
was wave my head, nod and smile
Giving it another shot
trying to bear them for another while

One day he came home to a house
filled with flowers not a brick in the wall was left to see
one more yellow than the last, ever ignoring my request

He was going on about
the dangers he had to face
Padding himself on the back
on the job he did today
the walls covered with flowers.
All but one spot he could barely see

a yellow note sticking up on the door,
written days earlier on
And he hadn’t noticed
that I was long gone
When he picked it up to read
he could not believe his eyes indeed
It said in case you're looking for me
If you need me find me
under the rose tree...
